From a construction site to the finished Tiima

Regardless of the superstitious date, Tiima was handed to the Oulu Museum and Science Centre on Friday 13 March – the construction was finished and preparations for opening began.

Tiima’s lobby is starting to look finished.

Tiima has progressed to the phase where exhibition and facility plans begin to take shape. The opening is still months away, but the complex is beginning to come together.

Even though the delivery event was unassuming and functional, seeing the finished building was an unforgettable moment. “The building’s harmony, style, and inner peace actually surprised me and left me speechless”, Oulu Museum and Science Centre’s Director Pekka Olsbo describes.

The building fits into its surroundings well. “It respects Myllytulli’s factory milieu, and that appreciation can be seen in the indoor materials as well. The brick and concrete surfaces make up a warm and delicate atmosphere. The ten-meter-high walls and the VISIO Experience Space’s white projecting surfaces create a strong contrast”, Olsbo thinks.

The largest challenges have been the numerous, and often large-scale, tenders that have taken up a lot of time and energy from multiple employees.

At the same time, many lessons have been learned. “The biggest lesson is that even a large-scale construction project such as this one and its costs can be controlled when it is lead patiently, systematically, and with a good attitude. On behalf of the city, we want to thank the construction manager Ville Laitinen who was leading the project”, Olsbo states.

According to Oulu Museum and Science Centre’s Director Pekka Olsbo, it was ensured that the building was finished as agreed at the event.

 TIIMA COMES ALIVE

The next step is furnishing, audio-visual installations, and finishing up the facilities for use. The staff will also shortly move in.

Registrar Jukka Rissanen has a lot of work to do next because the rescue plan must be compiled, and devices and equipment must be procured and installed. Also, exhibition construction will start with full force.

“In large projects such as Tiima, it is important to define extent, goals, and responsibilities. Our complex is naturally divided into exhibitions, so delegation has been easy. This has eased maintenance and monitoring. As the exhibition construction begins, schedules, risk management, resource allocation, and communication will become even more important. Luckily, all sub-projects include professionals who have designed the project with care, and we are ready for challenges”, Rissanen explains.

Rissanen was surprised with the finished building – luckily, he was happily surprised. “Everything has gone ‘without a hitch’. We are extremely thankful to the contractor and all cooperation partners.”

THE BIGGEST WISH

Customer Service Manager Milja Häll believes that Tiima offers everyone something – experiences for both curious and inquisitive visitors.

“You can come to Tiima alone or with your family or friends. Tiima will be Oulu’s calling card which citizens can proudly present to their friends and loved ones”, Häll explains.

Finally, Olsbo presents his biggest wish: “It would be great if Tiima found its audience and the audience found Tiima. We have fantastic and diverse facilities, and the building will be filled with amazing exhibitions, experiences, and opportunities, so it is easy to believe in Tiima’s success. I trust that Tiima will be a Museum and Science Centre that reaches international proportions and will be a significant part of Oulu’s coming success.”

Even though the opening is still months away, Tiima is becoming a meeting place for local residents and visitors – a place where you want to go back to. Tiima opens on October 9, 2026, in Oulu’s Myllytulli.
